The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys from donations and distribute them as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Toys for Tots was created in Los Angeles, California in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR. Based on the success of the 1947 pilot program, the U.S. Marine Corps adopted the concept and it has become the Marine Corps' premiere community action program and has directed an annual Toys for Tots campaign to take place in local communities nationwide.
